On Her Terms with Nikki Elledge Brown

🎯 on micro-habits: bc bullseye or bust isn't helpful. [OHT 075]

If you're talking yourself out of action because you think it's "massive action" or bust (and "massive action" sounds exhausting), give this one a listen.

It can be so helpful to broaden our definition of habit-creation success, deciding on a SPECTRUM instead of a binary.

Good-better-best style, which I discuss in THIS related episode on resetting goals and timelines when we feel "behind." (https://podcasts.helloaudio.fm/player?episodeId=9a4ed673-8522-4818-9579

The trick is to choose a micro-step that is so doable you have NO resistance to it. You almost roll your eyes at it, but you also know that doing it will actually give you a spark of energy. It's both doable AND meaningful. (Because you know deep down it's a step in the direction you wanna move, and something is better than the nothing you've been choosing till now.)

EXAMPLES: moving $5 to savings (leading to $10, $100, $1000, or auto-transfers) putting on your shoes (leading to eventually working out, walking outside, etc.) walking inside, in place, for a few minutes after each meal (leading to eventually walking 30 minutes a day, or 5k steps, etc.) opening your doc and working on ONE sentence of your manuscript (this is for meee, because books are made of chapters are made of pages are made of paragraphs are made of... sentences!) restarting the dryer (leading to eventually taking the clothes out and folding them)

As you take the one first step, you'll start to rebuild trust that you can and will (are!) doing this. You'll feel ready to add on the next level, and the next. If you feel too much resistance, scale it back. Don't use that as a reason to choose the "nothing" side of "all or nothing" again.

Let's live in the land of something and see where that gets us.

Hi! 👋 I'm Nikki.

...Elledge Brown.

Creator of the On Her Terms® universe.

Pro word nerd and mom of three.

I'm a creative advisor, coach, and strategist for entrepreneurial women who love their work, their families, and their alone time.

I'm also a military spouse and former park ranger and college professor with a penchant for almost excessive verbal processing. (You've prob picked up on that by now.)

After over a decade in business and momming, moving from my fave Hawaiian island to my fave Texas town, reckoning with and recovering from my own brand of #onherterms burnout, I've been deep in introspection + experimentation over here:

Got it. Not a dress rehearsal. What do I really want my life to look like? What do I want it to feel like? In each area of life, what are my terms for this season? When I get really honest and ditch the should dos and the have tos…what's left? What’s true? NOW WHAT?

This podcast is a space to track that journey, to share my field notes, to anchor in the stories and lessons my clients and I are learning along the way.

Join me here to refresh your OWN definitions of what matters most to you. Motherhood, ambition, fulfillment, creativity, relationships, inspiration, REST, success, community, and about a squillion other words and concepts that deserve thoughtful consideration.
